Knot · Tie on a hook, swivel or lure
Spade end hook knot
Tie a spade end hook, which has no eye, to a fine leader: pole fishing, small hooks for sardinella, mullet and lagoon fish. Seven to ten snug turns, from the spade towards the bend: the turns clamp the line against the shank and the spade stops them slipping.

Step by step
- Lay the line along the shank, point side, and form a loop towards the bend
- Wrap the tag end around the shank and both strands, from the spade towards the bend: seven snug turns
- Pass the tag end back through the loop
- Moisten, pull the main line: the loop closes under the wraps and the line comes out in front of the spade, point side
The test before fishing
The line must come out in front of the spade, point side. Pull hard: the turns must not slide towards the bend.
